Taylor Russell McKenzie, who was born in Vancouver on July 18, 1994, was raised in Toronto and Vancouver. Russell was born to both black and white parents. She was raised on her mom's side. Her skin color made her feel unaccepted in her early years. [3] Her parents struggled with financial issues. They were always moving and moved 16 times in an attempt to fund her father's job. Russell stated that in spite of all the challenges, there was always the opportunity to reinvent, to make something completely new. Russell's parents were financially struggling and she was always moving. When she was 18, she started her first acting class. She saved the money from work to purchase an automobile and drove to Los Angeles to audition. Once her money was gone and she returned home, she went back to work, until she had enough earnings to audition again. That routine went on for four years, until she landed her first major TV role.
